In these uncertain economic times, organizations that rely on donations to make expenses are the hardest hit. Earlier this year Time for Teens was informed that a $10,000 grant we had been told was a guarantee was ultimately denied - money that was part of our budget for this year's bereavement camp.
Despite this setback, several new, creative strategies for raising funds have developed that we want to tell you about. We ask you to consider one of the ways you can help Time for Teens now and in the coming months. Your continued support is deeply appreciated and is changing many peoples' lives.
Time for Teens will be hosting our first ever YARD SALE on Saturday, August 28th from 9AM to 1PM at 94 Whites Lane, Southampton! Want to help? There are three easy ways get involved:
DONATE--Have some items you've been wanting to get rid? We'll be happy to take them for our sale...furniture, books, art, household items, clothing and more. Email with questions or call Martine Scheuch at 631-287-1625 to schedule a drop off.
VOLUNTEER--We need volunteers the day of the sale to help organize, sell and clean-up. We're asking for just 2-3 hours of your time. Contact Laraine by phone at 631-338-7258 or by email.
SHOP--Come to the sale, shop and tell your friends!
Time For Teen's Summer Camp 2010 will include the creating and shooting of a short film, giving the teens insight into their healing process while encouraging creative expression. The purpose of this film project is to create a documentary which combines creative expression for grief with the goal of healing following the loss of a loved one. It will reach teens across the United States to help them realized that they are not alone and that there is a way to grieve in a healthy way.
Joining us for the filming is Rune Line, Cinematographer. Rune Lind’s work has been seen on ABC, NBC and CBS, across multiple genres including music videos, feature and documentary films, commercial spots, and new media platforms including Television 2.0, Mobile and gaming consoles like the Xbox 360. With a deep-rooted passion for the cinema verite and documentary methods, Rune’s style and new media arts background lends a contemporary perspective to the ever-evolving landscape of digital storytelling.
Living and working between NYC and Los Angeles, the Hamptons are still the only place Rune calls home. Raised by a family of artists, writers and illustrators, the Hamptons became his backdrop for creative experimentation.

The following is an exerpt from a letter written by a camper at the end of our 2009 retreat.
...I would like to say Thank you to everyone, it has been a rough week for all of us and we each got through it together. There is nothing better than to watch a group of teenage strangers become such great supporters and friends. We can now call ourselves a family...Waiting for this week the entire summer I had no idea what I was in for, Laraine tried and tried and tried to explain it but I just didn't understand. Laraine, I finally get it!...I give each and every one of you credit to have the courage, the risk of taking chances and talent to be a part of this awesome adventure. I want you all to stay strong each and every day and please do not shut yourselves down. Everyone is a beautiful young adult, and to have pain on your shoulders like we all have does not keep you from staying strong. You must stay strong, fierce, confident, and have a ton of courage and support everyone you see who is hanging low....Thank you all God Bless and "Dance as if no one was watching!" Lots of Love, xo Anonymous Teen TFT 2009
More about Time for Teens and the need for teen bereavement services...
“Gordon's innovative program is dedicated to providing teenagers with a sensitive, caring, and creative environment for healing through education and counseling. Each summer the organization holds a week-long bereavement camp on filled with activities that help them heal and strengthen resilience through creativity, connection communication, and caring.” Time For Teens Holiday Party Warms Hearts in Sag Harbor, Hamptons.com, December 2009
“Because teenagers are entering the phase developmental psychologist Erik Erickson refers to as "formal operational," their major focus is on establishing independence. Experiencing the death of a family member or friend complicates their struggle for identity, and they may pull away from parents and adults toward reliance on peers for what to think and how to act. The way adults can be most helpful to them as they journey through their grief process is to provide non-judgmental safety and assurance as they struggle for meaning.” from Teens & Grief, Donna Schuurman, Ed.D. & Amy Barrett Lindholm, M.S. The Prevention Researcher, 2002
